newyorker:

In the magazine this week, Lizzie Widdicombe explores the rapidly evolving plus-size fashion industry:

In 1985, the average woman wore a size 8. Today, she wears a size 14. … Plus-size apparel represents almost eighteen billion dollars of the hundred-and-sixteen-billion-dollar women’s-apparel business, and in the past year it has grown three per cent.”

So more than 50% of women are considered plus sized, but only 15% of the apparel business revenue comes from them? Imagine how much money the fashion industry could make if they actually sold what women wanted—and could wear.

giving someone the raspberry

douglasbgibson:

raspberry—a rude sound made with the lips and/or tongue; a Bronx cheer.  Razz is a variant; as in “to razz someone.  That is, to make fun of them or deride them.

How did a delicious fruit devolve into a nasty sound?

It comes from Cockney English rhyming slang:

Raspberry tart…means…fart.

Look it up! http://www.cockneyrhymingslang.co.uk/slang/R

Mmmmmm…. raspberry tart.
